The number of federally declared disasters in the United States has increased significantly over the past decade. This certainly informs our need to be prepared as well as to know-really know-how to respond appropriately. The mental health affects of disasters are the second most significant impact (after death or injury) and general training in psychiatry, psychology, social work or counseling is not sufficient to adequately equip professionals to intervene.  Disaster specific training is necessary.

Local community workers are usually very effective in providing practical supports, resources to address basic needs and referrals. Anyone untrained in disaster mental health response should refrain from trying to apply psychological interventions. If interested in becoming competent in disaster behavioral health response, start with training in Psychological First Aid which you can access for free online at www.learn.nctsn.org

Welcome and thanks for visiting my Website! My credentials mean that I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and hold a Doctorate in Clinical Social Work. I am licensed in MA, NY, NJ and TX. I am also nationally certifed by the ACSW. It has been my priviledge over the past 25 years to work with individuals and families suffering from various types of psychological distress and emotional problems as well as the effects of disasters, trauma and violence. I provide clinical supervision to therapists and am well versed in cognitive behavioral treatment, operational and psychological debriefing, stress management and secondary traumatic stress interventions for individuals and organizations.

After the World Trade Center Attacks of 9/11/01 in New York, I directed the disaster mental health response called Project Liberty, which continued for three years. I then went on to help launch the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and also spent two years in the Gulf Coast after Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ike. More resently I directed the BP Oil Spill Distress Helpline and the 9-11 10th Anniversary Healing and Remembrance program. I have continued to  provide consultation and training throughout the U.S. as well as internationally.

I am now a Senior Advisor for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Disaster Technical Assistance Center (DTAC) which is a contract held by ICF International.
